History of Halbstadt: A Mennonite Village in the Molotschna Colony

Basic facts of Halbstadt:
– founded in 1804 by Mennonites exiting the Vistula Delta
– 1835 population: 308
– 1835: a Zentralschule (high school) founded
– 1843: Neu-Halbstadt, a new village abutting Halbstadt, is established. Halbstadt is now sometimes called Alt-Halbstadt.
– 1857 population: 581, living in 71 houses
– 1871: became an administrative centre of the Halbstadt Volost (district)
– 1907: school of commerce established
– 1908 population: 956
– 1908: twelve businesses are listed for Halbstadt, another ten for New-Halbstadt, including: three vinegar factories, two large steam power mills, a starch factory, a barley mill, two tile factories, two oil presses, and two large motor factories.
– 1930s: all business owners lost their property to the Communist regime
– 1930-41: at least 122 men were exiled and another 367 in 1941
– 1942 German army statistics: 1,984 Mennonites represented 27% of the total population of 7,348
– 1943: remaining Mennonite population joined “Great Trek” westward to Poland and Germany
– 2025: Google Maps shows former Halbstadt and Neu-Halbstadt amalgamated as part of Molochansk (population 6,100)
